Michael Boykin - Adjunct Professor of Law

Michael Boykin ’11, is a Deputy Bureau Chief in the Kings County District Attorney’s Office in Brooklyn, New York. As a litigator in one of the largest and busiest prosecutor's offices in the country, Michael has handled many of Brooklyn’s high profile and complex cases. In his current position, he manages and oversees the intake of all felony level cases in one of the agency’s five trial divisions. In this role, Michael oversees the presentation of criminal cases to the New York State Grand Jury to produce criminal indictments, as well as authorizes plea offers. Michael also conducts regular trainings and mentors junior-level attorneys on case and witness preparation, the precepts of evidence, legal writing and theory, litigation, criminal procedure, evidence collection and investigative techniques.  

Prior to his position in the trial division, Michael served as Deputy Bureau Chief of the Early Case Assessment Bureau for approximately two years, where he oversaw the intake and screening of all new criminal cases of all levels within Kings County, managing the preparation and investigation of these cases from arrest to arraignment. Michael also oversaw the expeditious processing of adolescent offenders and juveniles, as well as reviewed cases for diversion. In this position, Michael mentored both senior and junior attorneys on criminal procedure, search and seizure, legal writing, and ethical prosecutions. 

Michael was appointed as an Assistant District Attorney in 2012, assigned to the Trial Division, where he progressed from handling misdemeanor crimes to presenting hundreds of felony cases to the New York State Grand Jury, and then ultimately assigned a full felony caseload in Supreme Court. As a felony-level prosecutor, Michael tried numerous jury cases to verdict before achieving his current position. 

As a senior-level prosecutor, Michael handled manslaughters, vehicular homicides, and other violent crimes such as attempted murders and shootings. Michael handled a myriad of investigations into serial offenders and pattern crimes consisting of robberies, burglaries, and arsons. In addition, Michael has conducted numerous long-term investigations into financial and white-collar fraud, identity theft, and weapons and narcotics trafficking. Michael has also participated in prosecutions for other specialized units, including the Homicide, Civil Rights, Hate Crimes, Frauds, and Police Accountability Bureaus, as well as enhanced cases and investigations by utilizing social media, electronic and digital evidence, and forensic evidence.

Additionally, Michael has participated in joint investigations with other law enforcement agencies, served as an office liaison to the New York Police Department and other Federal, State and City agencies, and has been recognized, by his peers, community leaders, and was awarded by the New York City Council for his Dedicated Service to the Community.

In addition to serving as a prosecutor, Michael serves as an Adjunct Professor at Touro Law Center, where he teaches various courses in the practice of criminal law. Michael was also the recipient of Touro’s Law School Service Award for his significant contributions to the growth of the Law Center and the legal profession.

Michael earned his Juris Doctorate from Touro Law Center in 2011, as well as numerous honors, including the Exemplary Contributions to the Quality of Student Life Award at his Commencement and other academic awards including the CALI Award for Academic Excellence and Dean’s List. While attending law school, Michael was a tour guide for the Office of Admissions, and since graduating, has assisted in the recruitment of prospective students.

Prior to attending law school, Michael earned a bachelor’s degree from Binghamton University, as well as numerous honors, including Dean’s List and Commencement awards. While at Binghamton, Michael was an Academic Peer Advisor, the Club Softball Team Founder and President, and the Senior Class Vice President.
