Student Spotlight: Madison Scarfaro

Congratulations to Madison Scarfaro, who was recently selected as an Honorable Dorothy T. Eisenberg Women in the Law “Trailblazer” Award winner!

The Trailblazer award is presented to a rising second- or third-year law student from a participating law school who demonstrates the same personal characteristics representative of the Honorable Dorothy T. Eisenberg, such as unwavering determination, civility, and commitment to continuing to pave the way for future generations of women professionals. The Long Island Chapter of the Turnaround Management Association created this award in 2022 in honor and memory of Judge Eisenberg’s lifetime of achievement. Judge Eisenberg, a former long-standing Judge of the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Eastern District of New York, was a trailblazer of her time, and set an example for generations of young women professionals.

Madison was selected for her role as a leader at Touro Law. She enrolled in law school with the hope to utilize her legal education and skills to advance women’s rights through her career and to educate others about the law. She has dedicated much of her time to helping others, starting well before her law school tenure. She has worked as a Field Director of Marsy’s Law for Pennsylvania, a victim’s rights campaign. Through this job she played a substantial role in the passage of bipartisan legislation, helping to reform laws of her home state to benefit crime victims. This experience fueled her desire to earn a law degree and help others on a larger scale.

At Touro Law, Madison is a true leader. She was elected as the Business Editor for Touro Law Review and serves as the President of the Women’s Bar Association, Vice President of the Public Interest Law Organization, and Secretary of the Sports and Entertainment Law Society. Madison was named a Pro Bono Scholar and will work with the Federal Defenders of New York to help advocate for defendants in federal criminal matters and help to ensure that their constitutional rights are protected. She is a student ambassador at Touro Law, the student liaison to the Suffolk County Women in the Courts Committee, a student member of the Theodore Roosevelt Inn of Court, and is involved with pro bono work through the Breaking Barriers program. This past summer, she completed an externship with the Sports Legal Department at Roc Nation in New York City. Currently, she is doing an externship with the Criminal Division of the United States Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of New York. This summer, Madison will be a Summer Associate at Ruskin, Moscou, Faltischek, P.C. Madison is also a Board Member of Aspire to Autonomy, Inc., a Founding Member of Lehigh Valley Anti-Trafficking Week, and volunteers with the Michael Ann & Saquon Barkley Hope Foundation.

Madison stated, “Judge Eisenberg became a leader in the legal field at a time when women were not given the same opportunities as their male counterparts. While I believe that women have made strides in many areas, including in the workplace and in society, there is still so much work yet to be done, and I intend on being a part of that change throughout the rest of my life. I am so grateful to be the recipient of this award and am thankful to the Eisenberg family for the opportunity.”
