Five Touro Law Students Selected to Participate in the Nassau County Bar Association’s COVID-19 Law Student Pro Bono Program
July 22, 2020“I am confident
that the students in this program are serving as excellent ambassadors for our
law school while assisting community members in need as a result of the
pandemic,” stated Dean Langan. “The pandemic has created significant legal
problems for many individuals and business owners in areas including
bankruptcy, employment law, landlord tenant issues, and more. The NCBA’s effort
to respond and include law students in their work is commendable.”
The program
offers law students opportunities to gain hands-on experience as they assist
NCBA COVID-19 Community Response Task Force Volunteer Attorneys in providing
free legal consultations to local residents and small business owners. The
program provides a substantive educational experience and introduces law
students to the benefits of NCBA membership. Law students engage in a variety
of lawyering tasks, including client intake, interviewing, fact analysis, legal
research, document drafting and client counseling. Throughout, there will be an
emphasis on the importance of providing high-quality, ethical representation in
the context of limited-scope legal assistance.
Students in the
program can apply the hours to their pro bono graduation requirement. Since our
founding in 1980, Touro Law Center has been committed to providing a quality
legal education that encourages students to examine the moral goals of the law
while promoting social justice and community service. Today, Touro Law strongly
stands as a leader in promoting the moral and ethical responsibilities of the
profession.
