Touro Law Hosts Domestic Violence & Human Trafficking Program

October 14, 2014 Program Features Keynote Speaker Kathleen Rice ’91, Judges, Attorneys, and Other Prominent Panelists

October 14, 2014

Touro Law Center will host a Domestic Violence & Trafficking Program on Tuesday, October 14, 2014 from 5:30 – 8:30 pm in the auditorium. The event will bring together a variety of panelists from government, public service agencies as well as the attorneys and faculty.

The keynote speaker is Kathleen Rice ’91, Nassau County District Attorney. Other panelists include the Honorable Chris Ann Kelley, Acting County Court Judge, Domestic Violence Part; Honorable Stephen L. Ukeiley, Acting County Court Judge, Human Trafficking Part; Jennifer Garcia-Hernandez, Assistant Executive Director of Brighter Tomorrows, Inc.; Keri Herzog, Deputy Bureau Chief & Attorney in Charge of Domestic Violence Bureau at Suffolk DA’s Office; Laurette Mulry ’99, Deputy Attorney-in-Charge at Legal Aid Society of Suffolk County; Stacey A. Skorupa, Senior Assistant District Attorney, Special Investigations Bureau at Suffolk DA’s Office.

Dean Patricia Salkin stated, “Long Island is not immune from these heinous and illegal activities. Touro Law is bringing together leaders in domestic violence prevention and human trafficking prevention to raise awareness while considering some of the challenges faced by both service providers and victims.”

Lauren Gallo, a third year law student and president of the Touro Law Women’s Bar Association stated, "The panel will be promoting awareness of human trafficking and domestic violence, while informing students, the legal community and the public on what they can do to recognize and prevent these atrocities."

According to the National Human Trafficking Resource Center, human traffickers generate billions of dollars every year in profits by victimizing millions of people in the United States and around the world. Traffickers are estimated to exploit 20.9 million victims, with an estimated 1.5 million victims in North America alone. Despite growing awareness about this crime, human trafficking continues to go underreported due to its covert nature, misconceptions about its definition, and a lack of awareness about its indicators.

The event is being sponsored by the Touro Law Women’s Bar Association, Family Law Society, AMICUS and the Suffolk County Women’s Bar Association. This event is free of charge and open to the public. If interested in attending, please email lauren-gallo@tourolaw.edu.
