Additional Touro Law Student Named as 2015 New York City Bar Association Diversity Fellow

Touro Law Center Dean Patricia Salkin is pleased to announce that Jennifer Flores has been selected as a fellow in the 2015 New York City Bar Diversity Fellowship Program. Jennifer will be placed at MetLife for the summer. This decision brings the total number of Touro Law students selected as 2015 fellows to three.  Ingrid Tatiana Medina will be working with New York Life Insurance Company and Alexis Bullard will be working with Bank of New York Mellon. 

Dean Salkin stated, “New York City Diversity Fellows are prestigious placements and I’m pleased that Touro Law students have been successful in obtaining the fellowships over the years. All of this year’s fellows are deeply motivated and dedicated to the practice of law. I look forward to hearing about their experiences and watching them grow through these placements.”

 

Ms. Flores is a full-time, first-year student who has dreamed of attending law school since she was a child. She stated, “I love that attorneys advocate for and serve others. I have always wanted a career that would provide me with the opportunity to make a difference in the lives of people in need.”  In law school, she finds the work both challenging and rewarding and is looking forward to being a diversity fellow to apply what she has learned and gain hands-on experience. Upon graduation, she hopes to be an attorney that makes positive changes in people’s lives and maybe one day pursue a judgeship. Prior to law school, Ms. Flores earned a BS from the University of Hartford, where she studied Political Science and Criminal Justice.

“I am so happy that Jennifer was selected among the 2015 NYC Bar Fellows,” said Erica Edwards O’Neal, Director of Diversity and Inclusion at Touro Law. “Jennifer is a dedicated law student who has a very bright future. I’m confident she will make meaningful contributions at her placement and gain valuable experience that will help define her future career.”

Since 1991, more than 300 diverse and talented first year law students from eleven New York City area law schools have been given the opportunity to spend their first year summer in a law firm, or corporate or government legal department to better prepare them for careers in the law. The goal of the Fellowship Program is to provide first year law students from underrepresented population the chance to spend a summer in one of New York’s most exciting legal environments.

The selection criteria for Program Fellows is demanding, including a legal writing requirement, preparing a personal statement and being interviewed by a faculty-dominated screening committee at their respective law school. Having met these requirements, candidates are interviewed again by a panel of attorneys and other school representatives. Only those who pass the final hurtle are assigned to a participating employer.
