The Judith S. Kaye Arbitration Competition is a project of the Dispute Resolution Section of the New York State Bar Association and the American Arbitration Association. The competition brings together schools from throughout New York and the New York metropolitan area to compete in a mock arbitration of a commercial dispute. This year, fourteen teams competed and Touro Law placed first.
By participating in this event law students gain an understanding of the arbitration process and the vital role it plays in resolving business disputes. This year, teams competed using a problem based on consequences to industry of implementation of the federal Clean Power Plan. Each team in the competition had to write a brief, exploring all the complicated legal issues in the case and then role-play the lawyer and witnesses in the case for two preliminary rounds, switching sides in each round. Touro’s team met in the Final Round with Fordham and emerged victorious. The competition was judged by highly experienced arbitrators, who praised the competitors and offered insights and practical wisdom to all the competitors in a post-competition discussion and analysis.
Student competitor Cathy Breidenbach stated, “It was a great experience and a privilege to represent Touro Law.”
