May 15, 2017Touro Law Center’s 2017 Commencement speaker is the Hon. Joseph Crowley, U.S. Representative, 14th District of New York and Chairman of the House Democratic Caucus. Touro Law’s 2017 Commencement will be held on Sunday, May 21 at noon at the Tilles Center for the Performing Arts in Greenvale, Long Island, NY. Representative Crowley will also receive an honorary degree at the ceremony.
This year’s ceremony will honor 162 J.D. candidates, including 27 who completed their degree requirements in December 2016 as well as 5 graduates from the LL.M. in U.S. Legal Studies program, 3 of whom completed their studies in December 2016.
Dean Harry Ballan stated, “It’s a privilege to honor Representative Joe Crowley for his many years of distinguished public service.”
Congressman Crowley is a native of Woodside, Queens and a lifelong New Yorker, his dad a city cop and his mom an immigrant from County Armagh, Ireland. He has served the people of the Bronx and Queens with distinction for more than three decades. Before being elected to Congress in 1998, he earned a bachelor’s degree from Queens College, ran a successful small business for nearly 10 years and represented the 30th Assembly District in the New York State Legislature for another 10. In December 2016, he was elected as Chair of the Democratic Caucus, the fourth-highest ranking position in House Democratic Leadership.
A member of the powerful Ways and Means Committee, Congressman Crowley’s achievements include the Crime Stoppers program, which has provided millions in federal funding to local neighborhoods for graffiti clean-up, after-school programming and civic patrol efforts; the Urban Area Security Initiative, which targets homeland security funding to at-risk urban centers, resulting in more than $950 million to make airports, train stations and ports safer; and the landmark James Zadroga 9/11 Health and Compensation Act, which provides 9/11 first responders with health monitoring and care.
The National Journal magazine named him “a rising star,” and The New York Times has noted that his peers consider him to be a “hard working representative” who is “an impassioned advocate for his district.”
