Liberty & Justice Dinner Honors New Builders Society Inductees, Other Honorees

Touro Law Center welcomed three new members of its Builders Society and honored several other individuals, law firms and corporations at the annual With Liberty & Justice for All dinner held on May 16, 2018 at the Garden City Hotel. More than a quarter of a million dollars was raised at this year’s dinner, with nearly 350 tickets sold.

“This dinner provides us with an opportunity to recognize some among our many friends who have played an important role in supporting our school,” stated Dean Ballan. “As we seek to realize Touro’s ambitious mission, it is important to take a moment to reflect on where we came from and thank those who have contributed along the way.”

This year’s Builders Society inductees are:

Paul S. Miller former executive vice president and general counsel of Pfizer Inc. Mr. Miller was a member of the Board of Directors of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, former chairman of that organization’s National Chamber Litigation Council and also served as chairman of the Board of the Citizen’s Crime Commission of New York City. He served as the law school’s first dinner chair 17 years ago.

Jerome D’Imperio, Touro Vice President of Real Estate, Design, and Construction, started his career at Touro College in 2005 as an independent project manager hired to oversee the construction of Touro Law Center’s Central Islip campus, which opened in 2007. Within six months, Mr. D’Imperio sold the former law school in Huntington and was invited by Touro College to head up its real estate development, design, and construction department. His accomplishments include building projects at New York Medical College and Touro Dental College and Dental Clinic. 

Judge Leonard Wexler, of blessed memory, was born on Veterans Day 1924 and was awarded the Purple Heart and two Bronze Battle Stars for his service in the European Theater during World War II. In 1983 Judge Wexler was appointed to the federal bench by President Ronald Regan where he maintained a full trial calendar until his recent death. Judge Wexler was responsible for the creation of the Federal Court House in Central Islip where he oversaw every stage of its construction from planning to completion. 
His work with Touro Law Center and its students will serve as a lasting legacy to his career. His wife Barbara received the posthumous award on his behalf at the dinner.

In addition to the Builders Awards: 
  • Davis Polk & Wardwell LLP received the Dean’s Medal for their extraordinary support that enabled Touro to host law students form Puerto Rico who were displaced by Hurricane Maria. 
  • Corporation of the Year - presented to Arbor Realty Trust, Inc., 
  • Outstanding Alumni of the Year - presented to George Likourezos ’95, partner at Carter DeLuca Farrell & Schmidt LLP;
  • Seymour Liebman ’89, Executive Vice President of Canon U.S.A., received the Board of Governor’s Award; and 
  • Florence Hessen Scher ’85 was presented with the Paul S. Miller Award; 
  • Valerie Cartright ’03 who serves as Brookhaven Town Councilwoman was honored with the Elected Official of the Year Award.
