Touro Names Professor Jorge Roig Director of Neighborhood Programs
October 9, 2018Touro Law Center Dean Harry Ballan is delighted to announce the appointment of Associate Professor of Law Jorge R. Roig as Touro’s first Director of Neighborhood Programs. In this role, Professor Roig will oversee the Law Center’s neighborhood programs including Mock Trial and Street Law afterschool programs with local high schools and middle schools and a new partnership collaborating on a statewide high school civics program as well as other initiatives.
“If you are my neighbor I have an obligation to you regardless of your background,” explained Dean Harry Ballan “Being a good neighbor means being a family among families, getting to know each person we assist, the whole lawyer seeing the whole client. The Touro family is committed to the welfare of our neighbors, their families and the people they care about.”
Professor Roig received his A.B. from Harvard University and his J.D. from University of California at Berkeley School of Law. His primary areas of teaching and research are: Constitutional Law; Internet and Technology Law; and Intellectual Property (including Patents, Trademarks, Copyright, Trade Secrets, and other related state law matters). Before becoming a professor, he served as a Judicial Clerk and worked in private practice. He also served as Assistant Secretary of Justice, in charge of the Office of Legal Counsel in the Legislative Liaison’s Office, and the Contracts and Law No. 9 Division of the Puerto Rico Department of Justice.
Roig stated, “I am thrilled to be leading programs focused on the local community. These programs will be of immense benefit to all high school and middle school students involved. They will find new friends excited to help them to discover their potential and to flourish as human beings. We are looking to develop initiatives that will provide hands-on learning opportunities for law students while exposing them to the needs and, more importantly, the untapped strengths of our neighbors. Touro is poised to make a tangible difference in the lives of so many students. I am honored to be a part of this initiative.”
