Touro Law Students Recognized by Long Island Hispanic Bar Association
November 5, 2019Touro Law Center is proud to announce that two students have been honored by the Long Island Hispanic Bar Association (LIHBA). Third-year full-time student Syndie Molina was awarded an LIHBA scholarship and second-year full-time day student Ramon Octavio Cabrera was selected to receive an LIHBA stipend for a summer internship. Both students were recognized at the LIHBA's 18th Annual Scholarship Gala held last month in Syosset.
Syndie Molina was born in Paris, France, to Cuban-French and Dominican parents. Four years ago, she suffered a traumatic brain injury. Her experience in recovery motivated her to attend law school and become an advocate for people in need. She is the Student Bar Association President and co-editor-in-chief of the Law Center's Journal of Race, Gender, and Ethnicity. After graduation she plans to stay active in the many organizations she is currently involved with as a student, including the Federal Bar Association, Long Island Hispanic Bar Association and the Brentwood High School Mock Trial team.
She stated, "I am so thankful to the LIHBA for this scholarship and for helping me to pursue my dream. This support reinforces my decision to pursue a law degree and to move forward to make an impact on the world around me using my legal education."
Ramon Cabrera's parents immigrated from the Dominican Republic. He is the first member of his family to attend law school. Ramon participated in the LIHBA-sponsored internship program at the Suffolk County District Attorney's Office, where he was able to gain invaluable experience by second seating two jury trials. He is the Evening Vice President of both the Immigration Law Society and the Latin American Law Students Association as well as a member of the Moot Court Honors Board. As a result of the experience he received during his time at the Suffolk County District Attorney's Office, Ramon secured an externship with the United States Attorney's Office for the Eastern District of New York, starting January 2020. He stated, "I want to thank the Long Island Hispanic Bar Association for providing me with an invaluable opportunity to work at the Suffolk County District Attorney's Office and begin my pursuit of a dream to improve the criminal justice system in my community."
The Long Island Hispanic Bar Association works to advance the status of Hispanics both in the community and the legal profession through mentorships, legal education, leadership, community outreach and to promote the proper administration of justice. The LIHBA hosts an annual scholarship gala in support of law students in the community. With the help of generous sponsors, LIHBA invests in the future and gives deserving law students the opportunity to continue studying while easing their financial burden.
