Touro Law to Host Charles A. Reich Conference

Touro College Jacob D. Fuchsberg Law Center will host a one-day conference titled, “Charles A. Reich, A Commemoration of His Life and Legacy,” on Thursday, January 30, 2020 beginning at 9:30am at the law school in Central Islip. The full-day conference will explore the life, work, and legacy of Charles A. Reich, a Yale Law School professor and – to everyone’s surprise, including his own – a best-selling author.  

 

Reich loomed large in the history of American law and society of the second half of the twentieth century. His law review article “The New Property” (1964) not only influenced Supreme Court case law, it continues to inform how Property and Constitutional Law are taught in law schools today. His best-selling book The Greening of America (1970) explained the 1960s counterculture. Reich died last June.  The conference will commemorate his life and explore how his writing and teaching influenced the law.

 

“I met Charles in my last year of law school when he returned to Yale as a visiting professor,” said Rodger Citron, an associate dean at Touro Law.  “Later I became interested in writing about him and we became friends.  Our conversations covered many subjects – from his clerkship with Justice Hugo Black and his friendship with Justice William O. Douglas to his views on contemporary law and society – and occurred over a more than 15-year period.  It was a privilege to learn from Charles and it is an honor to chair this conference celebrating his life and work.”    

 

Speakers and presenters will include: the Hon. Guido Calabresi, Senior Circuit Judge, U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit, former Dean of Yale Law School, and Sterling Professor Emeritus and Professorial Lecturer at Yale Law; Harold Hongju Koh, former Legal Adviser of the U.S. Department of State, former Dean of Yale Law School and currently Sterling Professor of International Law at Yale Law; John Q. Barrett, Professor of Law, St. John’s Law School; Ray Brescia, Hon. Harold R. Tyler Chair in Law and Technology and Professor of Law, Albany Law School; Rodger D. Citron, Associate Dean for Research and Scholarship and Professor of Law, Touro Law Center; Doug Kysar, Deputy Dean and Joseph M. Field ’55 Professor of Law, Yale Law School; Gillian Metzger, Harlan Fiske Stone Professor of Law and Co-Faculty Director, Center for Constitutional Governance, Columbia Law School; Judith Resnik, Arthur Liman Professor of Law, Yale Law School; Sarah Seo, Associate Professor of Law, Iowa Law School; and Karen Tani, Professor of Law, Berkeley Law School.
