2011 Gould Book Award to be Presented to Charles & Gregory Fried
Authors of Because It Is Wrong: Torture, Privacy, and Presidential Power in the Age of Terror on November 16, 2011 at the Law School
August 8, 2011Central Islip, NY – Touro Law Center will present the Bruce K. Gould Book Award to Charles and Gregory Fried, authors of Because It Is Wrong: Torture, Privacy, and Presidential Power in the Age of Terror on Wednesday, November 16, 2011. The celebration, open to the public at no charge, will begin at 6:00 pm and will include a reception, book signing, lecture and award presentation.
The Bruce K. Gould Book Award, named for its benefactor Bruce K. Gould, is presented annually by Touro Law Center to the author of an outstanding publication related to the law, legal profession or legal system. It has become known as one of the most prestigious awards of its kind. Since 1993, it has been presented to many notable recipients, including Justice Sandra Day O’Connor, Vernon E. Jordan, Jr., Senator Christopher J. Dodd, Alan M. Dershowitz, and many others.

Charles Fried is a professor at Harvard Law School. Gregory Fried, his son, is a professor at Suffolk University. Their book, Because It Is Wrong, addresses questions about torture and privacy tactics used to thwart acts of terrorism. The book discusses the behavior and justifications of Bush government officials and examines more broadly what should be done when high officials have broken moral and legal norms in an attempt to protect the public.
