Judge Weinstein is the Subject of New Book by Professor Jeffrey Morris

Central Islip, NY – Legendary United States District Court Judge Jack Weinstein is the subject of a new book, Leadership on the Federal Bench: The Craft and Activism of Jack Weinstein, written by Touro Law Professor Jeffrey Morris after years of one-on-one conversations between Weinstein and Morris. The book, published by Oxford University Press, is being celebrated as a comprehensive study of one of the most influential judges in history.

To celebrate the release of the book, the Hon. Jack Weinstein, Professor Jeffrey Morris and attorney Kenneth Feinberg will visit Touro Law Center for a conversation with Dean Lawrence Raful on September 27, 2011 at 6 pm in the auditorium. They will discuss the career and life of Judge Weinstein, including some of his most memorable decisions.

“This book has taken years for Jeffrey to research and write and I believe it is a truly outstanding work,” said Dean Lawrence Raful. “I’m looking forward to sitting with these gentlemen to discuss the book, the process of interviews and writing and, of course, the life and career of one of our most important judges. It promises to be an exciting evening.”

Leadership on the Federal Bench: The Craft and Activism of Jack Weinstein is about the career of one of America’s most important and controversial judges. Well-known for his treatises on evidence and procedure as well as for writings covering virtually all areas of the law, Weinstein has handled cases involving segregation, nuclear reactors, abused mothers and the “mob” among others. Weinstein has seized the opportunities and tools available to federal trial judges to make policy which has had a national impact. One of the very few books dealing with the career of a federal district judge, Morris considers Weinstein’s background before his appointment to the bench and then examines his conception of the judicial function, his beliefs, values and ability as well as his strong support for an independent bar. Based in part on an oral history Morris and Weinstein undertook which covers two thousand pages, Morris offers many examples of how Weinstein’s background has affected his decision-making. As Weinstein is regarded by many as a “quintessential judicial activist”, Morris pays close attention to what this means on the trial bench.
